The Maine Coon Cat, information on the breed, history and characteristics

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural breeds of North America and is generally regarded as a native of the State of Maine.  Maine Coons have evolved into a hardy, thick-coated breed well able to survive in the harsh winter conditions prevailing in New England.  It has a long flowing coat, being relatively heavy and shaggy, shorter on the shoulders and longer on the belly and tail.  The word 'Coon' was derived from the brush-like tail that is reminiscent of a Racoon and is typical of the breed.  The coat is water-resistant and is easily groomed.

Maine Coons mature rather slowly taking 3-4 years to reach their full size.  They are large, tall, sturdy cats, males averaging 6-8 Kgs, females 4-4.5 Kgs.  At times, the size is often exaggerated to be in excess of 12 Kgs!!

Maine Coons can be found in a variety of colours and patterns, including solid, tabby, tortoiseshell, tortie-tabbies, smoke and shaded colours, with or without white.  The brown tabby being the best known.  Chocolate, lilac and colourpoints are not recognised colours in the Maine Coon.

The Maine Coon is well known for its loving nature, amicable disposition and great intelligence.  Many consider them to be the perfect pet, with their clown-like personality and amusing habits.  They can learn to fetch easily and adore playing with water.  They adapt to walking on a leash with very little trouble.  Together with their easy to maintain coat, character and ability to adapt to different environments, they are without doubt, very popular .and very addictive!
